Articles I Have Not Written
So—what’s the deal with Academia.com?
A few years back it seemed like a thing, and I guess it sort of sounds like something positive—a social media site for academics. I remember various admins where I was teaching recommending that we all join up, and so I did, and found many colleagues, and…then, nothing happened.
I wondered, What does this site actually do?
I’m still not sure….
Every now and then I’ll get a notification that someone has looked at my profile, or that someone has cited my work. Here’s something I got a couple of weeks ago:
9,844 papers mention Lowell Mick White
159 highly cited papers mention your name
Yeah, I’m pretty darn sure that’s not true. I have in fact been cited a few times, but that many times? Don’t be absurd.
And then I’ll get occasional emails asking if I’ve written a certain article. Here are some of the titles I’ve maybe allegedly written:
Experimental Cingulumotomy and Modification of Morphine Withdrawal
Enhanced Reliability in Silver Impregnation of Terminal Axonal Degeneration-Original Nauta Method
Plastic mounting of microscopic serial sections
Dynamics of a relationship: Rhesus mother-infant ventro-ventral contact
The fiberarchitectonics of the cat hippocampal formation
Electron-Microscope Study of the Effect of Increased Intracranial Pressure on the Arachnoid Villus*
A Convenient Optimized Method for the Analysis of Selected Solvent Vapors in the Industrial Atmosphere
Olfactory bulb projections of the rat
Qualitative Detection Limits for Specific Compounds Utilizing Gas Chromatographic Fractions, Activated Charcoal and a Mass Spectrometer
Ipsilateral afferents to the hippocampal formation in the albino rat
Arsenic Trioxide Absorption and Excretion in Industry
Direct Tape Access as an Adjunct to Learning
Accurate Immittance Measurements at Frequencies up to 20 MHz
Electroencephalographic patterns resembling those of sleep in certain comatose states after injuries to the head
Denervation hyperpathia: a convulsive syndrome of the spinal cord responsive to carbamazepine therapy
Photorearrangements of 2,4-disubstituted phenyl esters
Qualitative Limits of Detection of Specific Compounds Obtained by Trapping Gas Chromatograph Fractions with an Activated Charcoal Capillary and Analyzing with the Mass Spectrometer
Flow Characterization of Blockage Effects on a 61-Pin Wire-Wrapped Hexagonal Fuel Bundle
And, of course, I’ve written none of these articles—yet. (The two rat articles have interesting titles! Might be able to build a story around them)….
I guess I’m too lazy to quit academia.com. So I’m there if you want to find me, though I might never know it.
(I’m also everywhere else: x-twitter, Threads, BlueSky, Post, Mastodon, etc.)…
